Police tell residents to evacuate flood areas in A/R

The Police in the Ashanti Region have directed residents who live around river towns to evacuate as the rains set in.

Two siblings died in Asuoyeboah, a suburb of Kumasi, after torrential rains hit the capital on Wednesday evening.

The siblings have been identified as Maa Adwoa and Maa Akua.

According to Citi News Ashanti Regional correspondent, Betty Ohemaa Agyeman in Kumasi, the boundary of the wall of the house the resided in collapsed, resulting in severe flooding with water levels reaching about four feet high.

The area, which was previously water-logged, compelled some of the residents to stand on tall tables while some climbed onto the ceilings.

The mother of the three children, 26-year-old Abena Pokua, had carried the two-year-old Maa Akua on her back.

While trying to save the two from drowning, the one on her back fell off and Pokua lost control of eight-year-old Maa Adwoa.

The body of the eight-year-old was found on Wednesday while the other is believed to have been carried away by the flood.

The body of Maa Adwoa has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue, while the body of Maa Akua is yet to be found.

This brings to four the number of people who have lost their lives as a result of heavy downpours in Kumasi within the last three days.

The number includes three children and a 31-year-old man.
