Statement: Ghana mourns Baroness Margaret Thatcher

The Government of Ghana has learnt with profound sadness, the news of the death on 8th April, 2013, of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The Minister for Information & Media Relations noted that indeed, the United Kingdom has lost a remarkable and iconic leader whose steely courage and singleness of purpose will always be remembered.

Her strong belief in individual liberties and the market reforms that she introduced resulted in a more dynamic and robust British economy. We join others who have acknowledged Baroness Thatcher as one of the greatest British Prime Ministers of the 20th century.

Notwithstanding the economic challenges of the 1980s, the Government of Ghana recalls with appreciation the continuity of British financial support during Lady Thatcher’s premiership.

The Minister further noted that the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama on this sad occasion, on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana wished to extend to you, the Government and people of the United Kingdom our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the bereaved family.

May her soul rest in peace.

Accept Excellency, the assurances of His Excellency’s highest consideration.

Signed Hon. Mahama Ayariga (MP) (Minister)
