Zeera Group Maintains Roads

Youth in Road Maintenance, a module under the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA), formally known as National Youth Employment Project (NYEP), in partnership with the Zeera Group, has started road maintenance works in the Madina Municipality of the Greater Accra region.

Areas visited by the group recently in the municipality include Redco Flats, which is currently under construction, Zongo Junction and Libya Quarters.

Awal Mohammed, National Coordinator in Charge of Operations at Zeera Group, said the mandate of the group is to patch potholes on roads, clear weeds on the sides and desilt drains lying by them.

He said the module entails a routine maintenance project that seals potholes that were caused by torrential rainfall, adding that the group does not engage in roads that are technically damaged and need reconstruction.

He noted that the group has worked on 120,000 kilometres nationwide from January, this year.

“In the whole of Greater Accra, we are a little below five hundred and we are about hundred in this area. “We are also at Ablekuma North, South around the Kole Bu neighborhood. We are spread around the whole of Greater Accra,” Mohammed said.

He noted that the group operates under authorities such as the Feeder Roads, Urban Roads and the Ghana Highway Department.

He said most roads in the country have been constructed based on a lifespan which ranges for five to 30 years depending on the type of road.

Mohammed, who mentioned funding as a major challenge, said some roads need to be refilled and reconstructed.
