Driver’s mate jailed for robbery

A circuit court in Accra on Monday sentenced Isaac Ntow, a driver’s mate, to 30 years imprisonment for robbing a driver of his taxi at gun point in Accra.

Ntow pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery and the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, sentenced him accordingly.

According to the court, the convict did not deserve any mercy rather a harsh sentence to serve as a deterrent to the youth engaged in similar crimes.

Prosecuting, Mrs Afia N. Adu-Amankwa, a State Attorney, told the court that the complainant was Benjamin A. Djweter, a taxi driver of a KIA Pride with registration number GS 5011-09.

On February 13, 2011, at about 1:20am, the convict employed the services of the complainant at the Old Achimota Lorry Station to Dworwulu at the cost of 4.00 Ghana cedis.

On reaching a spot about 300 meters to the Dworwulu Special School, the convict pulled out a gun on the complainant and snatched the vehicle to Osenase in the Eastern Region.

Prosecution said the complainant’s father, Mr Henry Djweter, who resides at Osenase, spotted the vehicle and with the help of the police the convict was arrested and sent to the Oseanase Police Station.

The complainant then identified him as the one who snatched his vehicle.
