Teachers’ strike not over but… – Education Ministry PRO

The Education Ministry is hoping teachers will call off their week-long strike early next week.

Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Paul Krampah admitted the strike is still on but said given the thorough discussion the ministry has had with the leaders of the various teacher unions the strike may soon be called off.

He said substantial progress has been made with the teachers on issues relating to their promotion, allowances for invigilation and other issues which led to the declaration of the strike.

According to him, there are still some minor issues on the retention premium to resolve with teachers and that will be done, hopefully next week Monday.

Teachers walked out of the classroom on Monday in protest against irregularities in the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure.

They also accused government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission of dragging their feet in paying them their allowances.

The strike came at a time when students at the Basic and Secondary cycles are writing their exams.

The Labour Commission has met with the feuding factions in an attempt to resolve the impasse but very little has been achieved.

The Commission has given an ultimatum for the parties to resolve the crisis in seven days.

Paul Krampah is convinced the strike will be called off hopefully by next week.
