Schools in Secondi-Takoradi remained closed

Most schools in Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis were closed on Wednesday due to the nationwide strike by teachers.

The Anaji M/A cluster of schools, Anaji Estate Key Primary School, Higgins Primary, Dr Wilkie Junior High School (JHS), Bishop Essau Memorial School and Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Basic School remained closed, while some Junior High School (JHS) students were found loitering.

Mr Samuel Koram, a National Service Person at Anaji M/A Cluster of Schools told the Ghana News Agency GNA) that the JHS teachers were absent while only four service personnel were teaching the final year students preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination in June.

Mr Ofori Baidoo, Head teacher of the SDA Basic School, said the teachers were following directives from their various unions to go on strike to speed up the resolution of their grievances.

Beatrice Appartam, Form Four Home Economics Student of Takoradi Secondary School, told the GNA that some teachers came around but refused to teach.

She appealed to the teachers to take the plight of students into consideration and rescind their strike.

Meanwhile, form one and two students of the school were writing their end of term examination with national service personnel on duty invigilating.
