The general public should provide relief items to victims of the recent rainstorm that hit parts of the Norther Region, says the Northern Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO, Alhaji Abdulai Silimboma.
Hundreds of people have been rendered homeless in Gushegu, Yendi, Walewale and other areas after the rainstorm.
Speaking to Citi News the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Alhaji Abdulai Silimboma indicated that some relief items have been distributed to some affected persons in Yendi and Gushegu but more help is needed.
According to him, although “NADMO is the leading agent in disaster control it does not mean that we should be the final solution to the problem”.
He called for help from Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) as well as the general public.
“We are also appealing to benevolent organisations to come to their aid,” he added.
Last week the Deputy National Coordinator of NADMO, Ebenezer Dosu, told Joy News that the organisation “has little to live on right now” and appealed to the public to distribute to victims of disasters.
According to him, it was the practice of the organisation to buy some relief items on credit but he was quick to add that they have not paid for what they previously took on credit, so cannot take more.
Mr Dosu would not fully admit that NADMO is broke, saying the institution is only “challenged”.
His comments came at a time when residents in Tamale are already in desperate search of relief items following weeks of torrential rains.
