Don’t blame NDC for Ghana’s debt – Gov’t

The government has said allegations that it is responsible for Ghana’s current debt are propaganda.

Critics of government say Ghana’s debt increased from 9.5billion Ghana Cedis when the Mills-led administration took over to 33.5 billion Ghana Cedis.

They are attributing this to what they call the mismanagement of the economy.

But Hakeem Ahmed, a media liaison at the Finance Ministry said government cannot be entirely blamed for the debt.

“Let us make this point very clear; loans which are trickling into the debt stock have transcended regimes. Some of them have been in the kitty continuously for more than ten years,” Mr. Ahmed said.

He added that “so you cannot at one point pin the blame on the [NDC] regime”.
