GNAT asks teachers to develop positive attitudes

Irene Dunkan-Adanusa has urged teachers to adopt a positive attitude towards reading to impact the knowledge to students.

Teachers played a critical role in the transformation of the educational system and as such there was the need for them to exhibit professionalism in their duties to improve on the country’s education, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) said.

Mrs Duncan-Adanusa gave the advise at the closing ceremony of School Development workshop for teachers drawn from the kindergarten and primary levels in the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Volta Regions.

GNAT organised the workshop in partnership with the Pan African Teachers Centre and the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF).

The participants who were selected from deprived communities in the three regions were equipped with the necessary skills to develop illiteracy and numeral skills.

Mrs Duncan-Adanusa asked the teachers to share their experiences with their colleagues in order to enhance national development.

Mr Thomas Baafi, Course Director for the workshop said the participants were taking through topics such as phonemic awareness, oral skills, phonics, connection between sound and letters, vocabularies, smooth and fluent use of language and understanding of readings.

Mr Ernest Asamoa, Project Coordinator for GNAT called on the teachers to make mathematics attractive and help erase the notion that the subject is difficult.

He said mathematics is integrated with other subjects.

Mr Burris Mabande a representative from CTF expressed satisfaction about the workshop.
