NPP accuses police of bias

Samuel Awuku has accused the police of unfairness over their decision to allow a pro-government group to embark on a demonstration after thwarting a similar action by a separate group weeks ago.

The deputy communication director of the opposition NPP insists the police have continuously offered flimsy excuses in preventing demonstrations by opposition groups — a situation he described as ‘undemocratic’.

Mr Awuku registered his displeasure during a programme on Adom TV in Accra Wednesday.

His comments come in a wake of a group calling itself “Coalition of Ghanaian Voters” embarking on a procession to protest what they say is the disrespectful attitude of the Minority in Parliament.

The Coalition was also not happy about the constant invectives against the President by opposition politicians.

The police in January blocked a planned demonstration by the NPP youth wing for choosing the Freedom and Justice Park as their convergence point.

He said the decision by the Coalition of Ghanaian Voters to take their petition to Parliament was misguided since the members in question of the “Let My Vote Count Alliance” are not Members of Parliament.

Meanwhile a member of the Coalition Bernard Mornah has disagreed with Mr Awuku, saying “the Coalition went through due process before embarking upon the march and the sumbmission of the petition to Parliament was permitted by law”.
