First Northern Graduate’s Daughters Establish Fund

Daughters of the first northern graduate, the late Alhassan Gbanzabah have established a foundation to assist students of Ghana Secondary School, Tamale, where a house was named after him.

The daughters, Mrs Salma Alhassan Valcort based in the United States and Madam Sala Alhassan Mabel based in Britain, launched the fund in appreciation, of the school’s recognition of their father’s efforts.

The foundation, known as Alhassan Gbanzabah Foundation is in five categories, which includes an annual bursary of 300,000 cedis each for five indigenous Dagomba students from under-privileged homes.

The other categories are an annual 300,000 cedis each for two students of academic excellence, outstanding sports personality of the year and the best behaved/community spirited student.

The fifth category would be in the form of teaching aids for the school.

During the launching of the foundation at Ghanasco on Monday, nine students, including five under-privileged students and the school’s home science department received the maiden awards.

Miss Insuah Ayishetu, a form three student received the outstanding sports personality of the year award, while Mr. Abubakari Kamel-Deen and Mr. Sayibu Samiru, who completed the school last year took the academic excellence award jointly.

Master Rockson Raymond Sherif won the best student award for good behaviour and community spirit.

Mr Abdul-Rahaman Mahama Saani, Headmaster of the school, thanked the Gbanzaba sisters for their kind gesture and hoped others would emulate them.

He appealed to the family to help to rehabilitate the Gbanzabah House.
