The Methodist Church of Ghana on Friday appealed to President John Mahama to stand by his intentions and promises to work for a united Ghana.
The church also urged him to carry out his plans to work with all people for the common good irrespective of their creed, ethnic origin and political affiliation.
A statement issued by the Methodist Church and signed by Rt. Rev Dr Kwaku Asamoah-Okyere, Administrative Bishop, said the church is aware of the increasing tension and polarization of the Ghanaian society arising from various accusations and counter accusations by some of the political parties.
It said there is the need for urgent steps to be taken to arrest the waning national unity, peace and harmony so far attained, as well as foster the growth of our common good.
The statement also congratulated President Mahama on his successful and peaceful inauguration and urged his government to co-operate with all political parties in its bid to develop the country.
It appealed to members of Parliament to work together as representatives of all Ghanaians irrespective of their political affiliation to seek the common national good in all its business.
The statement also urged the judiciary to be fair and firm in the exercise of its functions to promote lasting peace in the country.
The church further called on the leaders of the various political parties to continue to follow the rule of law and adhere to the officially agreed principles to settle all disputes arising from the elections in court as enshrined in the constitution.
It said political activists must refrain from acts that could lead to disputes, acrimony, agitation or violence and endeavor at all times to do and say things that would promote peace, harmony and national development.
