Security Expert Kwesi Annin has applauded Ghana’s decision to contribute troops to the Western African pool of peace keeping soldiers scheduled to intervene in the festering Islamic insurgency against the Malian government.
Dr Annin who is the Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre in Accra in an interview with XYZ News said the Ghanaian government couldn’t have taken a better decision.
France intervened on Friday to stop the surge of the Islamic militants to the capital Bamako.
French war planes have since attacked the rebel positions in Diabaly.
The number of French troops on the group is expected to swell to 2,500 from the current 800.
About 3,300 West African troops under a UN Security Council Resolution, including 120 from Ghana are expected to be part of the intervention.
Speaking on Breakfast XYZ, Dr. Annin said Ghana’s intervention, which he described as very important, is in the interest of the entire sub region.
“This is a West Africa problem and I think that Ghana’s decision to play role and hopefully take a leadership role is very important because of our Pan Africanist ideology and our long term experience in international peace keeping” Dr. Annin said.
