Sodom and Gomorrah to be cleared for $600m project – Mayor

More than 50,000 slum dwellers at Sodom & Gomorrah will soon be moved to make way for the implementation of the 600 million dollar Accra sanitation and drainage upgrading project.

Accra Mayor Alfred Vanderpuije says the Court has already ordered the squatters of the slum to vacate the area.

This is not the first time the Mayor has threatened to evict the squatters from the slum.

Several previous attempts to that end have been met with stiff opposition by the squatters backed by human rights activists.

But Mayor Alfred Vanderpuije speaking on Breakfast XYZ said the eviction will definitely take place this time round.

Mr. Vanderpuije said he will not allow the 600 million dollar sanitation and waste management project to be jeopardized by the refusal of the squatters to move.

“For Sodom and Gomorrah the issue is already settled, it has been settled in the court. They have a responsibility and they have being asked to move.

“We are being very candid in the way we are executing it, they have agreed and they are taking up the responsibility” Mr. Vanderpuije said.

As part of the city sanitation upgrade project, the Mayor has promised to transform the filth-laden Korle Lagoon in Accra into a modern pleasure and transport complex comparable to those in Paris.
