WiLDAF commends President for nominating three women minister-designates

Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF- Ghana) on Tuesday commended President John Dramani Mahama for naming three prominent women leaders in the first batch of his ministerial appointments.

The nominees are Nana Oye Lithur, Executive Director, Human Rights Advocacy Centre to the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection; Ms Hanna Tetteh, out-going Minister of Trade and Industry to the Foreign Affairs and Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, former Vice Chancellor at the University of Cape Coast as the Minister of Education.

Mr Frank Wilson Bodza, WiLDAF-Ghana, Programmes Manager for Governance, said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, stressing that the three are worthy ambassadors of gender advocacy.

He described the three women as competent, excellent and capable of transforming their respective ministries.

Mr Bodza appealed to the nominee for Gender, Children and Social Protection, to work within the laws and cultural norms of the nation as they recognise all international treaties signed and rectified which affects women, children and other vulnerable groups in the society.

He said also appealed to the nominee to consider all issues leading to the passage of the affirmative law; and ensure the provision of adequate facilities to the Department of Women and Children in all regions.

Mr Bodza reminded the three nominees on the need to work in tandem with the Ministry of Local Government to ensure the amendment of the Local Government Act for more women to be appointed at the District Assembly level.
