2011 flood victims get two-bedroom house each

The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) has handed over 22 bedroom houses to victims of heavy floods that hit Atiwa District in the Eastern Region, in July 2011.

The GRCS was assisted by Swiss Red Cross Society (SRCS) to put up the houses for the 20 victims, mainly farmers, which attracted a cost of GH¢ 170,000.00.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Emmanuel Atta-Twum, District Chief Executive, said the flood cut off more than 100 people from their homes while others loss their lives.

He expressed gratitude to the SRCS for the continuous support to Ghanaians.

Mr Atta-Twum appealed to the beneficiaries to ensure regular maintenance of the houses and also observe good environmental sanitation in the area.

Professor Kwabena Bosompem-Mante, National President of GRCS, gave the assurance that the society would continue to offer humanitarian assistance to disaster victims.

Mrs Bridget Boaponsem Addey, Regional Chairperson of GRCS, appealed to the district assembly to work hard to eradicate illegal mining, which she said was the prime cause of the flood disaster.

Mrs Addey swore in members of the local GRCS to help tackle future disasters. During the execution of the project the society trained 10 masons and seven carpenters to adopt new technologies to boost their income.
