The National Road Safety Commission says patching the pot-holes on the Tema Motorway may prevent accidents to some degree though it is not a sustainable way of ensuring that the motorway is safe.
The Commission expressed their dissatisfaction with the initiative of the Highway Authority to fill out the pot-holes on the motorway instead of repairing the entire stretch of road.
Head of Communication at the National Road Safety Commission, Kwame Kodua Atuahene however commended the efforts by the Highway Authority, stating that the repair of the pot-holes can provide a temporary solution and help reduce the number of road accidents that occur on the motorway especially during this festive season.
He also added that the project is a good strategy to provide employment for the youth under the newly introduced Youth in Road Maintenance by the National Youth Employment Programme.
The Tema Motorway was built in 1964 by the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah and is the only motorway linking the industrial city of Tema to Accra.
At 45 years old, the road is rapidly deteriorating and showing visible cracks due to improper management.
