Five Communities Benefit From EU Projects

Five communities in the Kwahu South District have benefited from European Union (EU) micro projects worth 300 million cedis under the lndividual Limited lntervention Project.

The projects include a market, school blocks, a community library and VIP places of convenience and the beneficiary communities were Nkawkaw, Mpraeso, Bepong, Aduamoa and Asakaraka.

Dr. Kwaku Osafo, Programme Manager of the EU micro project management unit, announced this at the commissioning of a twenty-seater VIP toilet for the T.I.

Ahmadiyya Primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) at Nkawkaw at the weekend.

He commended the beneficiary communities for contributing to the project and said between 1990 and 1998, 1,855 similar projects had also been completed in the Brong-Ahafo, Western and Ashanti regions.

Dr. Osafo also mentioned that, additionally, under the fifth phase of the programme, about 2,000 projects were completed in the Upper West, Upper East, Northern, Volta and Ashanti regions last year.

He urged needy communities to apply for assistance, under the next phase of the programme in 2004.

Dr. Osafo noted that education plays a significant role in national development and appealed to individuals and organisations to assist needy but brilliant children to enable them to complete their education.

Mr Raymond Osafo Djan, the District Chief Executive (DCE) advised the people to maintain the facilities since they form a foundation for their development.

He said the assembly has disbursed 50 million cedis to 177 students of second cycle and tertiary institutions to enable them to complete their courses while libraries were being constructed in seven communities to promote education.

The DCE advised the youth to make good use of the facilities so that they could acquire skills and qualification needed for national reconstruction.

The Headteacher of the school, Mr. Joseph Acquah said 20 children were benefiting from scholarships following an appeal for assistance.
