Death Toll Rises to 102 in Boat Mishap

The death toll has risen to 102 in a boat mishap occurring last week in the Lake Volta, about 300 kilometers northeast of the capital Accra, according to reports reaching here on Saturday from Accra.

The victims, most of them students, met their death last Thursday when their boat sank in lake bed because of overloading, the reports said.

The boat was believed to have been carrying around 150 people instead of 76 licensed.

According to local police, the death toll might be still higher because some of the bodies have been floated to neighboring areas by strong currents.

When the accident occurred, only a handful had been able to swim to safety, including the boat owner on board, the reports said.

Those drowned students were going home on holiday from teacher training colleges in the Volta Region when the accident occurred, the reports added.
