Ghana’s flagship hospital, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH,) has certified the presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, as medically fit for the position of a President.
“I declare that Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom is physically and mentally healthy. No significant pathology, disease or disability was detected. He is medically fit to undertake executive function, sedentary or physically demanding tasks,” Head of Public Health Unit of KBTH, Dr. Philip Kwaku Amoo, certified.
According to the report, Dr. Nduom is also physically healthy with normal functioning body organs and systems, of sound mind with optimum mental well-being, health and function; the report also said Dr. Nduom does not have any significant pathology, disease or disability.
The PPP presidential hopeful submitted himself for medical examination at the Korle Bu, a fortnight ago in fulfillment of his promise to deliver to Ghanaians a transparent administration.
After the examination, Dr. Nduom pledged to make his report public and true to that, he has disclosed to the public the report on receipt.
Apart from visual impairment, which the summary of the medical history enquiry confirmed he was correcting with eyeglasses, Dr. Nduom was confirmed to be free of hypertension, stroke, heart disease and all other minor ailments such as Tuberculosis, dizziness and without a kidney disease.
The report further confirmed that Dr. Nduom apart from a noticeable family history of high cholesterol of which he was urged to deal with was also HIV negative.
The medium built and well kempt man with an average height of 1.75m and a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 23.8kg/m2 was also said to be someone with a healthy Liver, Kidney, Spleen and an intact hernia orifice.
His nervous system, the report disclosed, was functional effectively. Presenting the synthetised version of the report to Dr. Nduom at a short ceremony at Korle Bu,
Dr. Amoo thanked the PPP flag bearer for submitting himself to the examination and urged the general public to make occasional medical examination a habit.
On receipt of the report, the PPP flag bearer encouraged other presidential contenders to do same.
He also called on Ghanaians to make medical examination a regular habit as a means of staying healthy.
Dr. Nduom revealed that he would be encouraging his employees “to go for regular medical check-ups to know what is wrong with them so that at least their employer can help deal with it.” He assured the medical staff that the vice presidential candidate of the party, Ms. Eva Lokko, would be making arrangements with the hospital to have her medical examination.
The move by the PPP standard bearer has been lauded by politician and Health administrator, Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy as one that has advanced the frontiers of accountability in Ghana’s politics.
The health administrator stated that those seeking to be president surely have an obligation to know their health status and to sufficiently assure the public of their health status but “it does not mean that they have to tell us all the details of their exams.”
“I for example would have sent a one-paragraph statement from the candidate’s physician saying that the candidate is in good health,” he noted.
