Karbo tape is “much ado about nothing” – Egbert Faibille

Lawyer of Anthony Karbo, former NPP Youth Organiser, Mr. Egbert Faibille Jnr, has described the invitation by the police of his client [Karbo] as “much ado about nothing.”

According to Mr. Faibille Jnr, “we are looking at a situation where Mr. Karbo has been cautioned on the basis of section 207 of the criminal and other offences Act, Act 29 of 1960, which reads ‘a person, who in a public place or at a public meeting uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or by which a breach of the peace is likely to be occasioned, commits a misdemeanour.”

“So this tape assuming that it even exists; or its Mr. Karbo’s voice, was it recorded in his room or within [the] confines of a room, such that it is not a public place? So that if you bring charges against him, will it stand?”

Lawyer Faibille Jnr added, “there is a certain burden on the Police or prosecution if they indeed want to go on that way.”

The Police CID has however given notice that it has not brought any charges against the former National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Karbo.

Mr. Karbo was on Thursday invited by the Police to give a caution statement on comments he is alleged to have made to the effect that he was planning to get mercenaries from Libya, Liberia and other African countries to cause confusion at polling centres during the December general elections.

Speaking on Citi Fm, the Public Relations Officer of the Police CID, ASP Joseph Darkwa explained that investigations had only commenced into the matter.

“As he has given us his statement, investigations have started so from tomorrow, we will be on it and we will investigate. It does not mean we have charged him. It does not mean he has done something wrong.”

“As of now he is not culpable, it’s an allegation and we are going to, as it were, investigate and come out with the facts.”

A few weeks ago, Anthony Karbo, was alleged to have been captured on tape plotting with goons to employ the services of mercenaries from Liberia, Libya and other neighbouring countries to create confusion in the coming December elections.

Karbo has since denied the existence of any such tape saying he has no knowledge of it and has not had any discussion to that effect.
