Melcom Tragedy – Death toll rises to nine

The death toll in the Melcom disaster has risen to nine with 77 persons rescued from the rubble.
Rescue operations are ongoing as the bodies of the departed ones have been transported to the morgue.
The Achimota branch of the Melcom Shopping Complex opposite the Neoplan Assembly Plant, collapsed on Wednesday around 9.20 a.m. after what eyewitnesses described as an explosion.
Government today announced that a team of disaster management experts and doctors from Israel are expected in the country to assist with rescue efforts. This is in fulfillment of the promise made by the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Bar-li made on Wednesday. The equipment would include emergency medical equipment, rescue and monitoring equipment.
The President John Dramani Mahama, has given strong indication that those whose negligence led to the tragedy “will pay a price.”
