Articulated Truck Catches Fire near Achimota Melcom Site

While Ghanaians are still trying to get to terms with the sudden collapse of the Achimota branch of the Melcom Shopping Mall, an articulated truck has caught fire close to the site.

Viasat1NewsOnline understands that the articulated truck caught fire while in traffic just close to the new Achimota overpass.

The incident happened just before 4pm Thursday.

There are no reports of injuries or fatalities, and the cause of the fire is yet to be disclosed.

The Fire Service personnel who were attending to the collapsed Melcom building have diverted attention to the truck and are currently doing all they can to put off the fire.

Meanwhile, rescue efforts at the collapsed Melcom building site have been boosted with the arrival of an 8-member team from Israel with special equipment and sniffer dogs, to assist in the mission. 77 people have so far been removed, with 9 reported dead.

The Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko-Vanderpuije, is expected to address the media shortly.
