Two non-governmental organizations, Apple and R-NET with support from international donor agencies, has held a training workshop for some rural health volunteers and health professionals to create awareness of pneumonia at Old Ningo.
Madam Elizabeth Dawson, a facilitator, said pneumonia prevalence is higher in children, especially those in rural areas and also do not get treatment which often result in infant mortality.
Participants were taken through causes, signs and systems, prevention methodologies among others and were told to encourage parents to allow their new born babies to be immunised against pneumonia.
The workshop was also used to high light some survey finding in 2006 about pneumonia prevalence in the country.
According to the survey report in 2006, 33.6 per cent children affected by pneumonia were taken to health professionals or clinic, while 33 per cent children suspected to be effected with pneumonia were given antibiotics.
