La youth to drag Hawa Yakubu to court

The Minister of Tourism, Madam Hawa Yakubu could be dragged to court by the La Youth Association to seek “adequate compensation” for loss of revenue as a result of the closure of the La Beach during the Easter holidays beyond Friday 29th March as promised by the Minister.

Though the Association might however seek have the issue settle out of court, a source told the Network Herald that any attempt by the minister to frustrate them from getting ‘adequate compensation’ would see us in court.

The National Security Council (NSC) had on Monday announced a temporary closure of the La Pleasure Beach from March 25 to March 29, for a safety and security exercise. A statement from the NSC urged the general public to comply and co-operate with the directives to ensure that the exercise was completed within reasonable time to allow for normal operations at the Beach during the Easter festivities.

The Tourism Ministry however later expressed regret for inconveniences that the exercise might have caused to programmes lined-up during the period of closure and butr expressed hope that the beach would be opened to the public on Good Friday March 29.

This stance is in spite of a marathon meeting last Wednesday between representatives of the Ga-Dangme and the minister that agreed to re-open the beach and by inference, permit the association to resume running the beach on behalf of the chiefs and people the La traditional area.

The leadership of the association frantically dismissed any government intentions of having a stake in the running of the beach. Instead it says the government should concentrate on the huge revenue resource generated by business activities operating along the popular holiday resort.

The La Youth Association took over the management of the beach from the Ghana Tourist Development Company (GTDC) last year. Subsequently, they improved security and claim the have it in their plans to improve sanitation,
