Takoradi Residents Petition Mahama Over Land Sales

RESIDENTS OF Takoradi Amanful have called on President John Mahama to help halt the sale of portions of land in front of Takoradi Flour Mills on the Takoradi-Cape Coast road to a private individual/company.

They said it was pathetic that the land also known as the Kasuarina Belt created in 1922 to help resolve pressing congestion and other social problems in Takoradi was being sold to private individuals and companies.

“The Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo and the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Capt (Rtd) Anthony Cudjoe have turned a blind eye to these wrong doings which defeats the purpose for which Governor Guggisberg created the Kasuarina Belt,” they alleged.

Addressing a press conference in Takoradi last Friday, Francis Eghan aka Abaatan, an opinion leader at Takoradi Amanful, said the residents would not sit down for their lands to be sold with impunity.

“Two attempts by me to secure police permission to organize a massive demonstration against this evil practice were disallowed by the regional police commander with very flimsy excuses,” he lamented.

Mr. Eghan noted the arbitrary sale of Takoradi government lands had reached alarming proportions which required the immediate intervention of the President.

He stressed that Takoradi had become choked with vehicular and human traffic due to the oil find in the region with its attendant influx of vehicles and foreigners in the area.

“It is therefore very preposterous for the Lands Commission and the political authorities to dispose of the few lands which could be used to solve the congestion problems here,” he added.
