Woman drowns in Abbey Lagoon following closure of Ivorian border

A 45-year-old woman from Ellenda near Tikobo Number One, Madam Kowoah, on Thursday drowned in the Abbey Lagoon when a canoe on which she and her husband were traveling capsized mid-stream.

The Jomoro District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police John Dzineku, told the GNA that the two were traveling from Assue to Appolonu when the incident occurred. The husband was rescued by people in another boat following them.

He said following the closure of the Ivorian side of the border with Ghana, which had made it impossible for bigger boats to cross the lagoon from that side to Ghana, Madam Kowoah and the husband decided to travel on a canoe.

The lagoon separates Ghana from Cote d’ Ivoire.
