Celebrating Nkrumah’s birthday should be more than a holiday – Chief

Nana Amonkona Nimpong, Twafohene of Dormaa-Akwamu Traditional Area has observed that the celebration of Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday with a holiday was not enough.

He has therefore suggested that the Government build at least a monument in his honour, in each of the regional, metropolitan, municipal and district capitals to serve as tourist sites.

In addition, any elected government should endeavour to put up something monumental in the name of Dr Nkrumah.

Nana Nimpong made the observation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani.

He noted that during the reign of the late Dr Nkrumah, most Ghanaians exhibited patriotism and commitment in national affairs and urged Ghanaians to love their country instead of showing their selfish interests.

Nana Nimpong said instilling patriotism and commitment in Ghanaians would depend on the training they get from their childhood and urged that the Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute be reconstituted to train politicians to be nationalistic.

He said the socio-economic problems confronting the nation was due to the inability of governments after the 1966 coup d’état, to continue with Dr Nkrumah’s seven-year-development plan, which aims at using the nations resources for development.

The 78-year-old chief recalled the administration of the late Dr Nkrumah with nostalgia, saying that, the seven-year-development plan was drawn with the assistance of technocrats which led to the establishment of many industries and educational institutions.
