THREE YOUNG men who were involved in a fatal accident at Ho on Monday survived with moderate injuries moments before the car burst into flames.
With the exception of its cover, a bible on the footrest at the passenger side of the vehicle was found intact even though everything around it was burnt beyond recognition.
Residents of Mawuli Estates, passersby and other eyewitnesses who thronged the accident scene were amazed as they wondered how the bible was not completely destroyed by the fire.
An eyewitness, Asafoatse Obeng Achia who narrated the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the saloon car with registration number GS 94-79-11 was travelling from the Poly Junction towards Mawuli Estates (Third Gate) on the Ho-Adaklu Highway before the incident happened.
On reaching Mawuli Estate (Second Gate), the vehicle skidded off the road when the driver attempted to avoid a head on collision with another vehicle after negotiating a sharp curve. The vehicle which was being driven by a young man believed to be in his late twenties ran into a high tension pole in a ditch by the side of the road. Apparently the pole was the main line that fed the Ho township with electricity.
Achia, a broadcast journalist with the GBC in Ho, noted that the driver along with his two friends managed to get out of the vehicle before it caught fire. They were promptly taken to the Regional Hospital (Trafalgar) for treatment.
According to some ‘Good Samaritans’ who were at the hospital, the victims were in stable condition with bruises and cuts on their arms and heads. When the paper got to the scene, the high tension pole had fallen down and occupied half of the road. The vehicle was burnt beyond recognition except for the rear portion of it.
The bible which had become the centre of attraction had every page intact except the cover which was burnt and edges which was darkened by smoke.
Meanwhile, personnel of the Electricity Company of Ghana in Ho have assured residents they are working assiduously to restore power to areas affected by the accident. They explained that the affected pole was one of three that provided Ho and other surrounding towns and villages with power.
Although power has been restored to Ho people living in Mawuli Estate and its environs have been cut off until work is complete.
A driver who usually used the road noted that although the curve was quite sharp, carefulness and tactfulness by drivers would prevent such accidents.
