Mrs. Perpetual Darfour, Board Chairperson of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has said the company needs at least $200 million as capital injection every year.
She said this would enable the company to extend the national grid to where there is no light, improve the capacity of the systems, purchase new equipment and machines and construction of more sub-stations.
Mrs. Darfour said this when the Board members called on Mr. Victor Smith, the Eastern Regional Minister, in Koforidua on Friday.
She said despite ECG’s challenges, the Eastern Region had benefited a lot from its operations and the company was putting in place mechanisms to check illegal activities throughout the country.
These include metering of all transformers and street lights and installing remote control systems to detect any defect. Mr. Smith expressed worry about frequent power outages in the region before the recent official load shedding exercise started and appealed to ECG to improve on its services.
