The Ghana Institute of Linguistics

Celebration of 50 years of language development, literacy and Bible translation seeks to define new ways forward

On September 20-22, The Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation will celebrate 50 years of activity in Ghana, during which time it has become the leading organisation doing language development and Bible translation in Ghana, as well as mounting literacy efforts which won it UNESCO’s Habib Award.

The events will be held in the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon, from 9 AM each day.

The first two days will be a conference on the state of Bible translation in Africa. Keynote speakers will include world-renowned Professor Andrew Walls and Ghana’s own Very Reverend Professor John David Ekem of Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon, Director of Trinity’s Centre for Exegesis and Mother Tongue Hermeneutics, an authority on Bible translation in Ghana who just published a book on the first Bible translations in Ghana. The conference will ask if Ghana’s mother tongues are still relevant given the pressures of urbanisation, population movements and the spread of English and regional languages, examine the past patterns of Bible translation in Africa and eventually chart a new course forward.

The grand finale celebration will take place on Saturday the 22nd. The keynote speaker will be Apostle Dr. Opoku-Onyinha who will address the issue of the building a viable organisation in Ghana.
