Chronicle: We Won’t Finance Budget Deficits – Duffour :

The paper reports that The Bank of Gana has outlined measures to improve economic management and lower the inflation rate to single digit by the end of 1998. Dr Kwabena Duffuor, Govenor of the Bank, said the measures include control of money supply, elimination of central bank financing of budget deficit and the adoption fo an interest rate that will reflect underlying macro-economic weakness that needs to be corrected. These policies, however, will be aided by government;s commitment to control expenditures while raising the level of revenue, he said in Accra at the unfurling of the bank’s flag to makr its 40th anniversary celebration. Dr Dufuor how assumed office a fortnight ago, said the bank was determined to reduce further inflation from the present 29 per cent to 20 by the end of the year and to a single digit rate by the end of 1998, the paper reported.
