Former President John Agyekum Kufuor on Saturday underscored the need for African governments to promote good governance to pave way for the accelerated development of their countries.
He made the call at a Fundraising Breakfast Forum of the Our Lady Star of the Sea Cathedral Catholic Church in Takoradi, as part of its centenary celebrations.
He spoke on the topic “Good Governance and Development”.
Former President Kufuor, who is a Catholic, said good governance is a prerequisite of development and should be the yardstick with which African governments should be measured.
He expressed regrets that some African countries were not developing and had sluggish economies because of bad governance.
Former President Kufuor spoke in strong terms about the need for peace before, during and after the December elections so that the development of the nation would continue to improve and raise the living standards of the people.
He urged stakeholders to play their roles well to ensure that the peace the country was enjoying was maintained.
“The people of Ghana deserve quality education and health care,” he said.
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI conferred the Knight Command of Saint Gregory the Great on the former President in recognition of his dedicated service to mankind and the Catholic Church in general.
