Obuasi: Three galamsey miners die in pit

Three galamsey operators in Obuasi-Anwiam in the Ashanti Region have died in one of the pits in the area.

The three who are all males, together with twenty eight others, fell into the pit while descending with a mine rope.

The Obuasi Divisional Commander, ACP Kofi Dwumfour Berchie told XYZ News that the rope, which the illegal miners were using to lower themselves into the pit, got torn killing three of them and injuring many others.

“When the galamsey people are going down [into the pit], they use some rope and descend. When they were descending with that rope, it got torn and they all fell inside the pit.”

He said the miners however managed to rescue about 28 of the galamsey operators. ACP Kofi Adu said, despite the tragedy at the mine site, the galamsey operators are back to work as if nothing happened.

“They are still working. Some are going in some are coming out. They are working. That is how they work. They don’t care whether people have died in the pit. They keep on working.”

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Heavens Gate mortuary in Obuasi.
