Tema (GAR), July 15, Two militiamen, Emmanuel Tetteh, 30, and Emmanuel Amoah, 23, who stole over 23.6 million cedis worth of rice and sugar belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP) were today sentenced to three years’ imprisonment each by a Tema circuit tribunal. The two had been charged with conspiracy to steal, unlawful entry and stealing. In addition, the tribunal ordered the accused persons to refund the cost of the food items or go to jail for three years each. Two others, Solomon Whitman, 23, also a militiaman, and Yakubu Mahama, 75, unemployed, who had pleaded not guilty are on a 30 million cedis bail each to reappear on August eight. Before sentence was passed, the tribunal chairman Major Jacob Abobor (Rtd), remarked that the situation where security men charged with the protection of life and property turn round to destroy life and loot property must be condemned by all. He cautioned that “if this kind of behaviour is not nipped in the bud, a state of anarchy would be created and all of us would be at the mercy of this gun-toting security officers”.
