Tragedy Hits GWCL Workers

Two casual workers of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) yesterday evening met their untimely death when a fence wall collapsed on them while they were replacing a burst pipeline in a ditch near the Awudome Cemetery.

Reports indicate that two other people who were also in the trench received serious fractures on various parts of their bodies and are on admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. One worker escaped on hurt.

Confirming the accident to The Accra Daily Mail on phone, the Area Manager of Accra/Tema, Mr. Emmanuel Fosu said one of the workers died on the spot while the other died on the way to the hospital. He said their family members have been notified.

He gave the names of the deceased as Mr. Emmanuel Armah and Mr. David Siekwao. Mr. Godfred Tetteh and Mr. David Etsua sustained injuries, while Mr. Augustine Amoah escaped unhurt.

Mr. Fosu said one of the main pipelines of the GWCL around the Awudome Cemetery near the Tropic LPG Gas filling point burst during the week. “Somebody has constructed a fence wall which was sitting on the pipeline so the line was to be replaced. So while in the trench after excavation and taking out the damaged pipe. They were in the process of fixing it back that suddenly the wall collapsed on them.”
