Parents reminded to put high value on discipline, good character training

A lecturer at the Presbyterian University College, Ghana, Reverend Dr Godfred Odei Lartey, has underlined the need for schools to put high value on discipline and good character training.

He asked that they give equal attention and priority to both the pursuit of academic excellence and help students to live within the rules of acceptable social behavior to avoid ruining their lives.

Rev. Dr Lartey said individuals and nations must be built on strong moral structures and not only on academic knowledge.

He was addressing the second graduation ceremony held by the Presbyterian Girls Senior High School (SHS) for 97 students at Chirapatre in Kumasi recently.

“The Role of the Presbyterian Church in Girl-Child Education” was the theme.

He reminded parents to provide equal opportunity for both their male and female children to fully exploit their God-given talents and potentials.

This, he said, was the only way they could be aided to make positive contribution to the socio-economic progress of the nation.

Rev. Dr Lartey noted with satisfaction the contribution of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) towards the promotion of quality education in Ghana.

Mrs Theresah Akua Baah, the Headmistress, described the performance of the school as impressive and said all 165 candidates it presented for last year’s West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scored 100 percent pass mark.

The SHS, established by the PCG a decade ago, has a student population of more than 400 students.

Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Chairman of the Asante Presbytery, urged the students to take their studies seriously and announced a GH¢1,000.00 prize award for the overall best student at next year’s graduation.**
