Officials of the United States Peace Corps in Ghana say they will allow their volunteers resume work in the Upper West region as soon as efforts are made to guarantee their safety.
They suspended their services this week after an attack on two volunteers by armed robber. The suspected robber was however stabbed to death by one of the volunteers in an attempt to defend himself.
The 22-year-old robber was later identified as Eliasu Najat, a native of WA.
The Police have however slammed the US backed organization for blowing the issue out of proportion indicating that the region is one of the safest in the country for workers.
But country Director of Peace Corps, Mike Koffman in an interview with XYZ News said the volunteers are eager to return to work, but that will happen after series of meetings this week with opinion leaders in Wa.
“We’ve been in Ghana for 50 years and we’ve working with people in Upper West so we are going to continue our security assessment and we have a meeting schedule with some opinion leaders over the weekend and hopefully agree on the way forward.
“It is our sincere hope that we will get some positive results and get back to work some time soon”. **
