The Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA) Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey has confirmed the construction of a bathroom attached to his office, and says he needs it to freshen up before attending evening programmes.
He told a press conference that a kitchenette which was serving no purpose was dismantled and a shower installed to enable him freshen up on occasions when he is required to attend official functions in the evenings.
Dr Wereko Brobbey also defended his use of the company’s guesthouse at Akuse as official residence, noting that it is because the recently retired chief executive of the VRA is yet to vacate the official CEO residence.
The press conference was called by the VRA board of directors to react to media reports about the Chief Executive’s reckless use of power, authoritarian style administration and mode of awarding contracts.
The Ghana Chronicle reported that the Presidential Candidate of the (now defunct) United Ghana Movement (UGM) among many unilateral and unexplained decisions closed down the office used by the Management Information Systems (MIS) Department, relocating all the computers to the staff canteen.
Both junior and senior staff were also reported to be complaining about the mode of awarding contracts including the contracts awarded for the renovation of the VRA headquarters building in Accra and the revamping of VRA subsidiaries.
Dr. Wereko Brobbey who left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to form the UGM, has also decided to use the Authority’s bungalow at Akuse in the Eastern Region as his official residence.
The Chairman of the VRA board Dr. Jones Ofori Atta says they have confidence in the Chief Executive, and rather recommended the interdiction of the Deputy Chief Executive, Resources and Services and the Director of Human Resources on suspicion of leaking information to the press.
The board chairman said the two men are the likely source for the information carried by the media about an enquiry into an alleged embezzlement of over $68,000 a former Administrator of the VRA Provident Fund.
He said the Board mandated Dr Wereko-Brobbey to restructure the organisation to ensure efficiency and corruption.
This included the suspension of the Provident Fund as part of measures to ensure that staff contributions were safe while investigations into its administration continued.
Dr Jones Ofori-Atta accused the media of causing panic among the public about an impending power shortage and generating confusion within the workforce, whiles attacking the integrity of the VRA.
