EC holds workshop for Parties in Upper West

The Department for International Development (DFID) has given 9.3 million Ghana cedis to the Electoral Commission (EC) to undertake voter education with a view to deepening understanding and transparency in this year’s elections.

The money would be used to train electoral officers and give political party executives and agents education that would create confidence and trust in the electoral process.

Hajia Sahadatu Maiga, A Member of the EC in charge of the Upper West Region said this at a capacity building workshop organized by the Commission for representatives of political parties in the region at Wa on Wednesday.

Under the theme: “the inbuilt integrity of Ghana’s electoral process” the workshop focused on the rights and obligations of political parties, the role and importance of political party agents and towards a peaceful 2012 elections – perspective of political parties.”

Hajia Maiga said the massive rejection of ballot papers during elections in the past was enough grounds to undertake adequate voter education to ensure that such mistakes are not repeated in this year’s elections.

She said the second aspect of the education campaign being carried out by the EC would involve sending party executives to the operations room and the ICT Department at the Commission’s head office to assuage any misconceptions about the two outfits.**
