Students in Ashanti Region receive laptop computers

Some 1,175 students from 53 Senior High Schools (SHS) and tertiary institutions in the Ashanti Region have been presented with laptop computers at a ceremony in Kumasi.

The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology together with the RLG Communications Limited made these available.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Islamic SHS, Nurses and Midwifery Training School at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), University of Education-Kumasi Campus and Garden City University College were among institutions whose students benefitted from the package.

Madam Sherry Ayietyey, the Environment, Science and Technology Minister, said the goal is to help enhance the teaching and learning of information communication technology (ICT) at the various levels of education.

Dr. Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, said the government would ensure that the youth were not left behind by globalization and would continue to work in partnership with the private sector to improve access to ICT education.

Mr. Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, the Regional Director of Education said ICT was a major subject of study in all schools, there was the need to increase access to the use of computers.

It was on account of this that the collaboration between the Education and the Environment, Science and Technology Ministries, needed to be hailed and strengthened, he added.

Mr. Thomas Adda, Ashanti Regional Manager of the RLG, said the company was determined to partner the government to create opportunities for young people.**
