Beaches in Greater Accra on African Union Day witnessed a low turnout with some presence of security personnel to ensure peace and safety among holiday merry makers.
As at 1500 hours when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited some popular beaches like the Labadi Beach and the Accra Beach near the castle, there were few people hanging around unlike other holidays where large numbers of people throng to the beaches to relieve the stress of work.
Some revelers spotted by the GNA crew were busily enjoying themselves amidst singing and dancing while some were playing football and volley ball.
Some security personnel who spoke on anonymity to the GNA expressed satisfaction about the event adding that they were deployed to ensure that merrymakers comply to the rules and regulations to ensure orderliness.
They said they would do everything in their capacity to control the number of people at the beaches to protect life and property even though the crowd is not large.
They called on beach authorities to always cooperate peacefully with the security forces so as to ensure a peaceful celebration.
Mr. Kwabena Poku, member of the Zoomlion Limited, attributed the low turnout to the poor weather adding that since it rained in the morning, many people were prevented from coming to the beach.
The African Union consist of 54 African states and the day was instituted on 9 July 2002.**
