Court fines two drivers for traffic offenses

A Cape Coast Circuit Court on Tuesday, sentenced a 33 year-old driver, Abdulai Ibrahim to a fine of GH¢1,200.00 for careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm. This resulted in the death of a 12-year old boy.

Abdulai pleaded guilty to all the three charges and in default he will serve 20 months imprisonment

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Samuel Obeng Addo, told the court presided over by Mrs Florence Kai Otu that, on September 18 last year, Abdulai who was driving a tanker towards Moree, crashed into a taxi when he failed to observe traffic regulations.

He said when Abdulai reached the road leading to the Moree Hospital Junction, he swerved into the outer lane and crashed into an oncoming cab.

The Prosecutor said the passengers in the taxi sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Central Regional Hospital where one Martin Tawiah, 12 years died on arrival.

Chief Inspector Addo said a sketch of the scene indicated that a truck parked along the lane of Abdulai, apparently caused him to swerve to the opposite lane where he lost control of the steering and collided with the oncoming taxi.

The court also fined Samuel Acquah, a 29-year old driver, GH¢144.00 for dangerous driving and causing harm.

Chief Inspector Addo said on January 11 last year, Acquah who had passengers on board his taxi knocked down and killed one Philip Konadu, aged 16 who was using a Zebra crossing at Abakam on the University of Cape Coast- Elmina highway.

He said the victim who was severely injured died when being conveyed to the Central Regional Hospital.**
