Ashanti Region Police downplay reports of impounded weapons

Police in the Ashanti region say there is no cause for alarm over the interception of some weapons aboard a Metro Mass bus en route to Tamale from Kumasi.

Reports say the impounded bus with registration number AS 6810 Z was traveling to Tamale from Osino in the Eastern region.

Joy FM earlier reported that the driver of the vehicle said the bus stopped at the Ashanti regional office of the Metro Mass at Abrebo to refuel. He narrated that whiles refueling, some bus attendants at the local station decided to offload goods from the cargo compartment on the bus and they were prevented from doing so by some passengers aboard. This led to heated exchanges between the two parties.

The suspects were detained at the Ashanti Regional Headquarters and questioned later.

But the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyenin told XYZ News, the suspects said the guns were meant for funeral activities.

He said the police only arrested the suspects in order to abate the fears of the passengers and that they were not arrested because they had imported the weapons for any diabolical reason.**
