Workers advised to start economic activities before retirement

Mr. Charles Adama, a retired accountant of the Ghana Education Service, has asked workers to start economic and income generating activities whilst in active service, to enhance their welfare when they go on retirement.

He advised them to build their own houses before pension to avoid renting accommodation or dwelling in family homes.

Mr. Adama was speaking on “Preparation for Retirement,” at a three-day mid-year review conference of the Association of Principals of Technical Institutions, at Nkoranza, in Brong-Ahafo.

He said “It is unfortunate that some pensioners resort to lotto staking for a living.”

Mr Adama called on the principals to engage in economic activities to earn additional income to support their families.

Alhaji Alhassan Umar, president of the association, explained that “such conferences are aimed at sharing ideas and listening to the success stories of others, to help improve the conditions in our institutions.”

Mr. Albert Adusei, principal of Nkoranza Technical Institute, commended the association for choosing Nkoranza as venue for the conference.

He said that, the event would give him the experience and knowledge needed to manage the institution, which is the only one in Brong-Ahafo.

Mr. Adusei said the school, established in 2007 with 74 students had 474 students.

Courses and programmes being offered include Auto-mechanic, Mechanical Engineering and Craft Practice, Block Laying and Concreting, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical Installation Works, Agricultural Mechanization and Catering.**
