EC: No Decision On Extending Biometric Registration

The Public Affairs Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Christian Owusu Parry, says the EC would have to conclude the ongoing biometric registration exercise, which is expected to end on May 5, before it can have any justification to extend the deadline.

Some Political parties have called for the extension of the exercise but Mr. Owusu Parry told XYZ News that the EC will only take that decision if a lot of Ghanaians have still not registered after the deadline, adding that for now, the commission is sticking to its decision of no extension.

Meanwhile the Western Regional Director of the EC, Stephen Opoku Mensah, has told XYZ News in an interview that the commission’s monitoring of the process show that the third phase of the biometric registration exercise has seen a remarkable improvement at the various centres.

“The third phase has been very, very successful. We don’t see people rushing but wherever you go, you see that people have really registered and we have not registered any violence anywhere. So for Western Region it has been relatively peaceful.”

Mr. Opoku Mensah attributes this to the fact that the registration officials have now become more conversant with the use of the registration kit.
