Local Government Minister denies allegation of assault

Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has denied as baseless accusations that he had assaulted the driver of a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

A press statement issued by the Minister and copied to the Ghana News Agency said, his attention has been drawn to allegations being perpetrated by some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially his opponents in the Tema West Constituency where he is contesting as a Parliamentary Candidate on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress.

The statement alleged that he assaulted the driver who nearly crashed into his vehicle.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo expressed regret that his phone was inundated with calls from as far as Koforidua that, an Accra radio station, had broadcasted the news item.

“I must state categorically and in unequivocal terms that I was nowhere around where the incident took place,” he said.

He explained that, those phone calls came while he was still at his residence at Community 18, and was getting ready to patronise the Biometric Voter Registration exercise.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo, therefore, described as false, baseless and unfounded the allegation by his political opponents, saying, it was meant to tarnish his hard won reputation as a Minister and cast a slur on his political ambition to wrestle the parliamentary seat from the NPP, come December 7.

He said, he remained focused on the better Ghana Agenda, and would work towards bringing development to the good people of Tema West who share his vision.

“No amount of falsehood unsubstantiated allegations against me by my opponents in the NPP will deter me from achieving the development agenda for the people of Tema West,” he added.**
