The Technical Committee charged to come out with proposals on how to resolve boundary disputes in 70 districts have presented an interim report to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in Accra.
The boundary disputes had virtually made it impossible for the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to release the 2010 Population and Housing Census at the district level, though provisional results at the national level had long been provided.
Presenting the report on Thursday, Professor Raymond Bagulo Bening, Chairman of the Committee, said the body received much cooperation from the various district assemblies.
He said the committee was yet to finalise the conclusions of the report and would make it available to the public on demand.
Prof Bening noted that, some of the disputes arose due to the fact that the Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies cross boundaries to other towns to collect revenue for their developmental projects, which should not be the case.
Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, commended the committee for their efforts to address the boundary disputes.
He congratulated the members for adopting the participatory approach in their study, and appealed to traditional authorities to foster unity in the creation of new districts.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo, called on the media to support the Ministry to educate and create awareness on local government policies.**
