The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the police to act firmly to bring to justice thugs creating confusion at biometric voters’ registration centres in the region.
The secretariat alleged that young men, riding unregistered motorbikes, moved from one centre to the other in Kumasi and neighbouring districts, harassing and intimidating prospective voters in queues for the registration.
Mr Sam Payne, the NPP Regional Secretary, who disclosed these to Ghana News Agency after touring some registration centres in Kumasi, said” “the party sense evil intention by gangs to disrupt the exercise in Ashanti, the party’s stronghold.”
He cited Asokore-Mampong, Asafo and Abirem as some of the trouble areas, and said the victims included students of the Kumasi Academy Senior High School.
Mr Payne alleged that registration officials at the Asafo Goil Filling Station centre had to call police for reinforcement to prevent the miscreants from causing commotion there.
He said similar incidents occurred at Kwontwima, Maakro and the Freeman College in the Suame Constituency.
Mr Payne called on potential voters in the region to register in the ongoing registration exercise.**
