Ghana to commemorate International Theatre Day

Ghana is to commemorate the second edition of International Theatre Day on March 27, to reflect on the important role theatre play in social-economic development.

The celebration on the theme: “Theatre for Development; Creating the necessary synergies between the Arts and Business,” will be marked in Ghana amidst performances, lectures and demonstration of the developmental role of theatre.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Ms Becky Adjei, Assistant Public Relations Manager of National Theatre said as part of the activities marking the day in Ghana, various theatre groups under the National Theatre, including Abibigromma, National Dance Company and National Symphony Orchestra would put up a performance.

The theatre companies will celebrate the Day with awareness creation, performances at Teshie, La and Salaga on Sunday, March 25.

They will continue with performances at Kaneshie, Mallam Atta and Tema Station on Monday, March 26 to set the pace for national celebration on Tuesday, March 27 at the National Theater.

The Day was instituted in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute as a platform for various nations across the world to project the theatre and its contribution to development.

A statement obtained from the Theatre Communications Group, US Centre of the International Theatre Institute by Ghana News Agency on the Day indicated that the celebration would reflect the power of theatre to strengthen cultural exchange and mutual understanding across borders.
